FAQs

Do reclaimed wood floating shelves include mounting hardware?

Yes. Our floating shelves include the appropriate concealed mounting hardware for the shelf size selected. Each shelf is routed to conceal the steel mounting system, creating a clean, bracket-free appearance once installed.

For proper support, the mounting system should be secured into wall studs or other suitable structural framing.

What shelf depth should I choose?

Choose your shelf depth based on the amount of usable surface area you need and how far you want the shelf to project from the wall.

6-inch shelves offer a streamlined profile for smaller décor and tighter spaces. 8-inch shelves provide a versatile balance for everyday shelving, books and décor. 10-inch shelves offer additional surface area for larger objects, kitchen storage and more functional applications.

Are your reclaimed wood floating shelves solid wood?

Yes. Our floating shelves are made from solid, authentic reclaimed wood rather than hollow box construction or newly manufactured wood made to look reclaimed. Each shelf is cut from historic timber and retains the natural grain, knots, checking and surface character of the original material.

Why choose Modern Timber Craft reclaimed wood shelving?

Our shelves are handcrafted from authentic reclaimed wood sourced from historic American barns and structures dating from the late 1700s through the early 1900s. Unlike newly manufactured wood made to look aged, the grain, knots, checking, saw marks, nail and peg holes and color variation in our shelves developed naturally through generations of use.

Floating and traditional mounting styles are available in multiple depths, lengths and finishes, and every order includes a provenance letter sharing the known history of the reclaimed material used for your piece.

If you have any questions about our different types of reclaimed wood shelves, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help.

What’s the difference between floating and traditional reclaimed wood shelves?

Floating shelves use concealed mounting hardware for a clean, bracket-free appearance. Traditional mount shelves use visible L-brackets beneath the wood, making the hardware part of the finished design.

Both styles are handcrafted from authentic reclaimed wood. The primary difference is the mounting system and the appearance you want on the wall.

How much weight can the standard L-brackets and heavy-duty mounting bracket support?

When properly installed into suitable wall framing, one set of our standard visible L-brackets can support approximately 50 lbs. Additional bracket sets are available for longer shelves or applications requiring additional support.

Our heavy-duty floating mounting bracket supports approximately 55 to 95 lbs, depending on the shelf length and configuration. Longer shelves use larger bracket systems with greater support capacity.

Actual weight capacity can vary based on shelf dimensions, wall construction, stud placement and installation, so proper mounting is essential.

Will the shelves match if more than one needs to be purchased?

Yes. If you need multiple shelves to coordinate, we strongly recommend ordering them together at the same time. This allows us to select reclaimed wood that matches as closely as possible in color, dimensions and overall character.

Because no two are the same, natural variation will still exist between individual shelves, but ordering the full set together gives us the best opportunity to create a cohesive group.

Please Note: If you purchase a shelf or multiple shelves now, and in the future choose to order more, we can almost guarantee that they will NOT match. Once one batch of material is gone, its gone forever.

Can I order a custom shelf length?

Yes. If you need a shelf length that is not listed, select the next available size up. For example, if you need a 58-inch shelf, order the 60-inch length.

Then enter your exact requested length in the Special Instructions section of your cart. We’ll cut the shelf to that custom length before shipping.

Details

Each shelf is made from authentic reclaimed wood and will naturally vary in grain, color, knots, checking and surface character. Depending on the timber and its original use, your shelf may also include nail or peg holes, saw marks, weathering and other characteristics developed over generations. Because no two are the same, these variations are an expected part of authentic reclaimed wood—not defects.

Product photos represent the overall style and character you can expect, but your shelf will be unique. Sample pieces are available if you would like to evaluate the wood and finish before ordering.

Our Roots

All of our reclaimed wood shelf material comes from historic barns and other structures throughout the eastern United States. These authentic reclaimed boards carry the grain, color, saw marks, nail holes, checking, and other characteristics developed through decades or even centuries of structural use. By reclaiming and repurposing this historic material, we preserve part of its story while creating one-of-a-kind wall shelves with the character and history of true reclaimed wood.
